Meet CHeryl Rock

My last name, 'Rock,' symbolizes strength and resilience, reminding me of my determination to overcome challenges. As a Toronto-based artist, educator, and curator, I aim to share peace and mindfulness through my work.

Art has been my innate language since childhood, helping me navigate difficult times and cultivate inner tranquility. My creations inspire others to stay hopeful and resilient, offering solace during challenging circumstances.

My Barbadian-Canadian heritage, with roots in St. Michael, Barbados, near Black Rock, deeply influences my art and identity. I believe in art's transformative power to discover beauty amidst adversity and instill strength in others. Through my work, I strive to convey serenity and mindfulness, connecting with the human spirit and reminding viewers of their inner strength.

the process

Driven by my passion for multidisciplinary art, I have become enthralled by the subtractive process of crafting silhouettes. This artistic journey has deepened my connection to Barbados, as each artwork created in this ancestral medium serves to enhance my cultural ties.

By meticulously weaving intricate forms reminiscent of tropical plants and incorporating the richness of gold into my pieces, I seek to present a compelling narrative that not only captures the essence of my artistic vision but also honors my roots.

Through the interplay of light and shadow, I explore powerful metaphors and conversations, while the juxtaposition of archival materials beautifully embodies the delicate yet resilient nature of my subject matter.

Utilizing Tyvek and archival paper, I create high-quality artwork that preserves its essence over time, symbolizing both strength and durability. With each piece, I aim to showcase the heritage and diversity within all Black forms, fostering a celebration of cultural identity and the beauty of ancestral art.
